The show is based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel Anne of Green Gables, first published in 1908. Amybeth McNulty plays Anne, an abandoned 13 year old girl who endures a childhood that is filled with violence in orphanages and houses. Anne is forced to live in Prince Edward Island with her aging siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. The show ends in 1919. Gilbert and Anne are happy. Gilbert is 55 years old and remains attracted to Anne.
